Members of The Capacity Development Group are experts in leadership, organizational change, knowledge building and sharing, and gender mainstreaming. We each have between 15 and 25 years professional experience working in policy and programme areas with organizations of all sizes.

We have come together to share this experience in a collaborative, team-based manner that maximizes the expertise available to our clients, and provides cost-effective solutions to their problems.

Since the early 1980s we have been developing the capacities for leadership, knowledge-sharing, supportive and flexible working relationships and team learning that comprise organizational competence to mainstream any policy priority, with an emphasis on work for equality between women and men, environmental conservation, and the interests of indigenous peoples. We have a wide range of clients, working mainly in the areas of international development, humanitarian issues and peacekeeping.  They include Governments, United Nations system agencies and national and international NGOs, as well as local groups and community projects.

Kalyani Menon-Sen started her career as a research scientist, and has deep experience in both formal and popular education and training and in leading consultative planning, training and documentation processes. She has worked with state governments, NGOs and grassroots organizations in the areas sustainable development, participatory training methodology, organizational development and gender equality. Kalyani has worked with UNDP India to develop a comprehensive gender mainstreaming strategy that involves deep change for both the organization and its staff. Patricia Keays trained as an adult educator and facilitator, and also has a background in forestry, fisheries/wildlife management, and recreation management.  She has 25 years experience building individual, group and organizational capacity, with a 15-year concentration on gender equality and, more recently, gender mainstreaming.  Expertise includes curriculum and learning design, facilitation of planning meetings, workshops and conferences, design and management of change processes, and supporting implementation capacity through a full planning cycle. Trish has exceptional ability in the management of complex learning cycles, and in the instillation of confidence through learning. Paula Beltgens is a consultant, coach, adult educator and facilitator with experience in public, private and non-governmental organizations. She is an associate faculty member with Royal Roads University in the MBA and MA in Leadership programs and a partner in Encompass Consultants. For 10 years she was an owner-operator of a community training center, building capacity in the effective and appropriate use of information technology. Paula brings experience supporting gender and racial equality with grassroots community, women’s, and Aboriginal groups as well as government and multi-lateral organizations. Strongly skilled in supporting individual and organizational capacity development, Paula facilitates personal and collective leadership development through group processes, individual coaching and knowledge management systems.    Testimonials

Picture of Sarah MurisonSarah Murison is the Team Leader of the Capacity Development Group.  A former staff member of UNDP, most recently as UNDP Assistant Resident Representative in Botswana and Deputy Director of the Gender Programme, she is a sociologist with a background in rural development. She brings a strong socio-economic analytic capacity to all her work.  She introduced gender analysis training to UNDP, and later led the team that defined sets of individual and organizational competencies needed for gender mainstreaming, along with a focused methodology to develop these competencies.  She is an experienced facilitator, has worked extensively on organizational change, micro-finance, poverty reduction and sound governance, and specializes in policy analysis, strategic planning and developing the “tacit” skills needed to achieve change management and gender equality goals.    Testimonials
